Ovulation Induction
Ovulation Induction: A Foundational Approach to Fertility
Treatment
Ovulation Induction (OI) is a gentle and effective
first-line treatment for women who are not ovulating regularly or who wish to
increase their chances of conception by producing more than one egg in a cycle.
It is one of the most common and straightforward fertility treatments, designed
to work with your body’s natural rhythm to stimulate the ovaries and promote
the release of mature eggs.
If your cycles are irregular or absent, or if you have been
diagnosed with conditions like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), Ovulation
Induction can help create the predictable, ovulatory cycles needed for
pregnancy.
How Does Ovulation Induction Work?
The goal of Ovulation Induction is simple: to encourage the
development and release of one or more eggs. This is achieved using oral or
injectable fertility medications that gently stimulate your ovaries.
The process is carefully managed through a series of steps:
- Initial
Consultation & Baseline Scan: We begin with a baseline
ultrasound at the start of your cycle to ensure your ovaries are quiet and
ready for stimulation.
- Medication: You
will take fertility medication for about 5-9 days, typically starting on
day 2, 3, or 5 of your cycle.
- Oral
Medications (e.g., Clomiphene or Letrozole): These are often the
first choice. They work by signaling your brain to produce more of the
hormones that stimulate egg growth.
- Injectable
Hormones (Gonadotropins): These are stronger, injectable
medications that directly stimulate the ovaries. They are used when oral
medications are not effective or when a stronger response is desired.
- Monitoring: This
is the most critical part of the process. We will monitor your response to
the medication through:
- Transvaginal
Ultrasounds: To track the growth and number of developing
follicles (the sacs that contain the eggs).
- Trigger
Shot: Once the follicles reach the ideal size, you will receive a
“trigger shot” of the hormone hCG. This shot precisely triggers
the final maturation and release of the egg(s).
- Timed
Intercourse or IUI: We will advise you on the best time for
intercourse. Often, Ovulation Induction is combined with Intrauterine
Insemination (IUI), where washed sperm is placed directly into the
uterus, to further increase the chance of success.
Who Can Benefit from Ovulation Induction?
Ovulation Induction is an excellent option for:
- Women
with Ovulatory Disorders: Such as PCOS or hypothalamic
amenorrhea.
- Women
with Irregular or Absent Periods: Helping to establish regular,
predictable cycles.
- Unexplained
Infertility: To increase the odds of conception by producing more
than one egg.
- Couples
Preparing for IUI: As the first step in an IUI treatment cycle.
What are the Goals and Success Rates?
The primary goal is to achieve a single, healthy ovulation.
Success rates are generally favorable, especially for women who are not
ovulating on their own. The chance of pregnancy per cycle is similar to that of
fertile couples trying naturally, typically ranging from 10% to 20%, depending
on factors like age and the presence of other fertility factors.
Safety and Monitoring: Our Top Priority
Your safety is our utmost concern. The risk of a multiple
pregnancy (twins or more) and a condition called Ovarian Hyperstimulation
Syndrome (OHSS) is managed through our careful monitoring. We adjust medication
dosages based on your response to aim for the development of a manageable
number of follicles (ideally 1-3).
